WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR THIS PROJECT? Every Wednesday until we are done, we will be constructing the labyrinth -- digging up sod, laying skim and wood fries and dirt in "hugelkutur" mounds that we will plant, laying the gravel path... We'll be out there from at least 12:00-3:00 every Wednesday (rain day will be the pursuit Wednesday). Come when you can and stay for as long as you can. We will let the mounds winter over and plant them in the spring! WAIT, WHAT IS HUGELKULTUR? Hugelkultur is German for "hill culture" or mound cultivation. Basically, we will create small (~2ft high) mounds of skim and wood chips, imbricate it with overturned sod, imbricate that with increasingly dirt, and plant. Hugelkultur retains water well and continues to feed the soil as the skim decomposes over *years*.
